ABOUT TENUGUI
In the past it was used during festivals and during the Edo period (1603–1868) for various purposes and not just like a handkerchief for wiping water or sweat. It gets softer with use, has good breathability, dries quickly, due to its unfinished edges, is valued for its hygienic aspects and can be used as a bandage substitute when injured, for warmth around the neck, sun protection, sweat absorption.It was also used as headbands, sashes, waistbands, face covers, and headgear, with Edo commoners embracing the fashion and enjoying different ways of wearing them depending on their occupation or situation. Additionally, it became popular as a gift, with names and family crests of Kabuki actors and Sumo wrestlers added to them, and shops began distributing them to customers with their store names, not just as something to wear but also as interior decorations, becoming widely adopted in the daily lives of commoners. Easy to wash and durable, it’s still used today for wiping hands, in Kendo, as festival attire, and for wrapping gifts, like wine, or as tokens of appreciation such as “bon voyage gifts [SENBETU(Additional travel expenses)],” “gratuities [KOKORODUKE],” and “New Year’s [OTOSHIDAMA]” gifts.
古くは祭礼時などに使用され、江戸時代（1603年 – 1868年）には、ハンカチのように水や汗を拭くだけではなく、さまざまな用途に使用されるようになりました。使うほど柔らかくなり、端が切りっぱなしなので通気性と速乾性に優れ、ケガをした際には、包帯代わりに、首に巻いて防寒、日差しの強い時には日差し除け、汗止めなど衛生面でも重宝された。鉢巻・帯・下帯・ほおかむり・頭巾代わりにも使われ、江戸庶民は職業や場面によって被り方などを変え、おしゃれを楽しんでいたと言われています。また、贈答用としても重宝され「歌舞伎役者」や「相撲力士」などが名前や家紋を入れ配ったり、商店が屋号を入れ顧客に配るようになり「ぬぐう物」「被る物」としての用途に加え、飾るインテリアとしても庶民の生活に広く浸透しました。汚れが落ちやすく気軽に洗えるので、現在ではお手ふきや剣道、お祭りの被り物としても使われ、ワインなどの贈答品や「餞別」「心付け」「お年玉」などのお見舞いを包む際にも役立ちます。
